Betty helped woman's rights creating her book the feminine mystique which broke new ground by exploring the idea of women. She wanted women to find their personal fulfillment outside of their gender tradition roles she helped advance the women's rights movement as one of the original founders and first president of the national organization for women. She believed women should have a bigger role in the political process. She was a strict force for change. Another book betty wrote called the second stage sought to help struggling with the hardships of work and home. She was a pioneer of feminism.
